How to Cover Up a Linoleum Countertop

    • 1). Sand down the countertop with a fine 200 grit sandpaper until the countertop is smooth and level. Press the sandpaper down with your fingertips against the countertop and move the sandpaper in a circular motion. Wipe down the entire countertop with a damp cloth or rag after sanding to remove any residue.

    • 2). Cover the countertop with a latex interior satin paint using a foam roller. Let the paint dry overnight.

    • 3). Apply two coats of base paint to the countertop, over the latex interior satin paint. The base paint colors will be the colors of your countertop. Make sure to cover the countertop lightly, but thoroughly, to achieve a speckled or textured effect.

    • 4). Let the base coats of paint thoroughly dry, possibly overnight. Roll two coats of water-based polyurethane over the entire countertop, allowing it to dry completely.
