1). Enroll in a certified driver training program. The training school will prepare you for both the written and skills test for the CDL exam. Some transport companies that need more staff sometimes offer to train new drivers.
2). Study for the CDL knowledge tests (written part of the test) either through the training school or on your own. You can find some practice tests online. Websites such as CDL Study state that the questions are applicable to all states. There are also audio study guides available. The test questions focus on safety issues and the rules of the road, information that is vital for someone in charge of such a large vehicle.
3). Practice your driving skills, preferably with the guidance of an experienced instructor. The skills test breaks down into three parts: the preinspection test, basic control skills and practical driving test.
