The Effects of Having Excessive Weight During Pregnancy

Women who are obese during pregnancy are common at third world countries due to rapid increase of low income families and less educated mothers.
Usually, they have the mentality of being rich if they are overweight while pregnant.
They do not believe obesity is associated with malnutrition.
In fact, almost everyone knew obese mothers have difficulty during delivery of the baby.
Still, others follow the trend of gaining weight while pregnant.
The best way to change this ways is through attending nutritional counseling.
An overweight pregnant is above 20% of the ideal weight or weighing more than 200 pounds.
This can result to hypothyroidism, the habit of excessive intake of food leading to a physically fat pregnant mother.
Reasons overweight pregnant mothers are a problem:
  • Obesity may cause incidence of gestational diabetes and pregnancy induced hypertension
  • Difficulty in assessing fetal heart tones during prenatal visits and during time of delivery
  • Difficulty to palpate the position and size of the fetus during delivery
  • Delivery of baby with an excessive fetal growth also known as macrosomia is common
  • Prolonged delivery causing postmature infants
  • Cesarean birth
  • Difficulty to handle ambulation leading to complication to arise like thrombophlebitis and pneumonia
Overeating that leads to obesity is a coping mechanism to some pregnant mothers and others do it as a usual habit.
They may feel anxious to change their pattern of menus.
These are some advices that are of great help.
  • try to engage in some exercise or an activity program
  • take a walk every morning for a few blocks
  • reduce the carbohydrate intake
  • have a well planned meal
  • Eat nutritious foods and prepares an emptying calorie meal
  • Be part of programs about nutritional counseling
  • Get some advice from a Doctor or Nutritionist
Pregnant mothers should change the habit of excessive eating and avoid obesity for her sake and the baby.
An unborn child is so precious and must be taken in good care before birth.
