Preparing For Motherhood
Most people think they should do something about getting ready for their baby once they become pregnant.
I suggest that preparation must begin when you start seriously considering being a mother.
This article is about what you can do to be well prepared for your baby so that you give him or her the best chance in life.
Here are some things you can do: 1) Once you start thinking of becoming a mom the first thing you need to focus on is your health.
This means becoming aware of your needs and attending to them at the level of your body, emotions and spirit.
This might mean stopping smoking, acquiring a positive attitude in your relationships, making your working environment and conditions more in line with who you are, etc.
2) You bring the idea of a baby in family conversations.
Talk with your partner.
Share each others' hopes, fears and ideas in an accepting manner.
3) Read up about subjects such as pregnancy, birth, baby care, child rearing practices and discipline.
Share your discoveries with your partner.
Watch his reaction to gauge his interest, and be willing to listen openly to any fears or concerns he may have.
4) Think and talk about how you and your partner remember being brought up.
Discuss what you have learned along the way.
Imagine how you could improve upon what you have experienced.
5) If your parents are alive discuss with them how they would do things differently if they were as wise as they are now.
6) Tell your parents how you would like them to be involved once the baby joins you in flesh.
7) Discuss with your own partner how to manage your respective parents in relation to your future child so that they are a resource rather than a hindrance.
8) Attend courses for personal development, pregnancy, or parenting.
While you are doing this preparation you may find that you are pregnant.
If you are not it could be that some of your anxieties are not addressed, your mind and body do not feel ready for the baby.
If you are in a similar situation you might benefit from seeing a family therapist.
