How to Quill a Star

    • 1). Insert the tip of the quilling tool at one end of the quilling paper, perpendicular to the edge of the strip. Turn the handle of the quilling tool and wind a tight concentric coil all the way to the end of the strip of paper. Pull the coil from the the tip of the tool and set it flat side down in one of the circles of the circle template and let it spring open until it fills the opening. The circle template is made from rigid plastic and has various diameter holes cut in it. The size of the circle you choose to use determines the size of the finished quilled star. Glue the tail-end of the coil to the adjoining paper with glue applied with a toothpick. Make a total of 6 circles.

    • 2). Wait for the glue to dry. Pick up each coil one at a time, holding it between the thumb and index finger and squeeze to form the circle into an oval. Squeeze, don't pinch.

    • 3). Cut three strips of quilling paper in half. Pick up one of the 6 strips and fold it in half. Insert the quilling tool at one end of the strip as in Step 1 and wind the paper around itself winding toward the inside crease of the folded strip. This will form 1/2 of the top of a heart. Count the number of times you turn the quilling tool. Pull the paper from the tip of the tool and repeat the step starting at the other end of the strip. Wind the same number of times it took to form the first half of the heart. Pull the paper from the tip of the tool. Play with the quilled heart shape until it's well formed. Make a total of 6 hearts.

    • 4). Lay the 6 quilled hearts out on the table with their points facing toward the center with the sides touching. Place the point of one quilled oval in each V at the top of each heart. Glue at every point of contact between the individual quilled shapes. Allow the glue to dry before picking up the star.
