How to Get Rid of the Plastic Smell on My New Yoga Mat
- 1). Put the mat outside in a well-ventilated area, such as a garden, and unroll it so that it is completely flat.
- 2). Leave the mat outside overnight so that it can be exposed to the fresh air. Check that it will not rain to prevent the mat from getting wet. If you do not have an outdoor space, take the mat to the park with you for a few hours to ventilate it instead.
- 3). Check to see if the smell of plastic has decreased or has entirely gone. If the smell remains but has diminished, keep it outside for another night.
- 4). Add a few caps of Pine Sol or Murphy's Oil Soap to a bucket of warm water. Dip a clean sponge into the water, and squeeze out the excess fluid. Wipe the sponge across the surface of the yoga mat.
- 5). Allow the mat to dry in the sun for at least three hours, and check for any unpleasant odor. The sun will help reduce the plastic smell. Do not keep it in the sun too long as it may cause the color of the mat to fade.
- 6). Get a fresh bucket of warm water, and add a few drops of tea tree oil, if the smell persists. Tea tree oil can be used as a cleaning agent and will also cover up the plastic smell.
- 7). Use the sponge to wash the yoga mat with the tea tree oil solution. Do this in a well-ventilated area, and leave the yoga mat to dry completely.
