How to Use a Ceiling Fan to Cool the Room

    • 1). Raise your house's thermostat to the highest setting you can live with. If you normally set your house's thermostat on 72 degrees F, set it on 75 degrees F or higher.

    • 2). Turn the ceiling fan "On" in the room you are trying to cool.

    • 3). Set the ceiling fan's speed to "High" and make sure it is running counterclockwise--this is the direction the fan needs to be running for cooling.

    • 4). Stand under the fan while it is running and you should feel a breeze coming down on you.

If you don't feel a breeze, turn "Off" the fan and locate the "reverse switch" or button that controls the fan's direction. Set the switch or button to the opposite setting. The switch or button will usually be on the fan's motor or on a remote control (if the fan has one).

    • 5). Run the fan until the room's temperature is where you want it. The ceiling fan will keep the cool air in the room moving. Your home's air conditioning will come on less often, especially if you have more than one ceiling fan in your home and you are running all of them.
