Seaside Marks End of the Lewis and Clark Trail
With three miles of powder-soft sand and two miles of ocean front promenade boardwalk, Seaside offers a setting that captivates, making it a family vacation destination for people seeking a place to relax and enjoy leisure beach activities for more than 100 years.
Located on Oregon's northern coast, Seaside is Oregon's largest and oldest ocean resort.
Established at the official end of the Lewis and Clark trail, the community has nurtured its historical roots and is a national landmark rich with historical sites.
Imagine standing where 19th century explorers' Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and their survey team once stood after crossing through largely unknown wilderness in search of a water route to the Pacific.
It is possible.
A monument stands in the heart of Seaside, at its famous Turnaround overlook, to commemorate the explorer's expedition and a reconstructed camp site is nearby, Fort Clatsop where they wintered before their return trip east, is a National Memorial.
The Seaside Aquarium, a longtime landmark, has stood in the same spot on the promenade, more than fifty years.
Here you can feed the seals and view colorful sea life.
The famed ornate carousal has moved from facing Broadway where it was when I was a child, but is still accessible for rides, inside one of many shopping malls on the main drag.
Bicycle vendors are plentiful for rentals to carry you through the picturesque town's quaint streets, downtown and along the Promenade.
The 12th Avenue Bridge awaits the fisherman.
My husband and two children fished and set crab traps here when they were younger and many visitors and locals still do.
If catching your own dinner isn't for you.
Seaside has many pleasant seafood restaurants.
Our family's favorite is Norma's, just off Broadway Street.
Pacific sunsets are dynamic.
Plan to admire one while relaxing on Seaside's Promenade.
On a clear evening the panorama is breathtaking, the view stretching all the way to infinity.
There are park-like benches along the Prom just for this.
Prepare to come, taste the salt and feel the wind.
Seaside is only a 90-minute, 80-mile drive from Portland and holds many special events.
During summer week ends the mood can become quite festive.
More to See Fort Clatsop National Memorial, between Seaside and Astoria, off U.
