Characteristics of a Chrysanthemum

    Origin

    • Chrysanthemums may have originated in Japan, China, southern Europe and northern Africa. It is believed that the first chrysanthemums were smaller than today's flowers. These early mums resembled small yellow daisies.

    Blooms

    • The blooms of chrysanthemums may be in a variety of different colors. These colors may range in shades of orange, pink, red, yellow, white, or purple. Some may even be bi-colors. Depending upon the variety of the mum, it may resemble a daisy, with petals arranged around the center. Some chrysanthemums are known as cushion mums and have rounded heads covered in petals.

    Plants

    • The plants of chrysanthemums have long stems and serrated leaves. The plants may become leggy and out of control if not trimmed back. This makes chrysanthemums suitable for a cutting garden.

    Pests and Diseases

    • Though chrysanthemums are considered hardy, they may fall victim to certain pests or diseases. These include aphids, mites, or powdery mildew. Aphids and mites may be kept under control by other larger outside insects. Providing proper air circulation around the plants can also help prevent powdery mildew.
