How to Add Stone to a Concrete Walkway
- 1). Sweep all loose dirt and dust from the existing concrete walkway, using the push broom.
- 2). Lay the stone over the concrete walkway in the desired pattern, leaving about a 1/4- to 1/2-inch gap between stones. Cut any stones to fit using the angle grinder and masonry blade.
- 3). Mix the mortar in the wheelbarrow using the square shovel; refer to mortar packaging for mixing instructions (mixing may differ depending on manufacturer).
- 4). Lift a stone (any stone along either end of the walkway) and set aside.
- 5). Apply a 3/4-inch-thick layer of mortar in place of the stone removed in Step 4, using the brick trowel.
- 6). Set the stone over the mortar and place the level over the stone to ensure a level surface, correcting as necessary using the rubber mallet. Repeat this process on remaining stones throughout the rest of the walkway.
- 7). Allow the mortar to fully cure before moving on to the next step. Refer to mortar packaging for curing times.
- 1). Mix the grout in the wheelbarrow using the square shovel. Refer to grout packaging for mixing instructions.
- 2). Fill the grout bag about three-fourths full, and twist the top of the bag closed.
- 3). Apply the grout to the gaps between the stones, starting at either end of the walkway and working your way to the other.
- 4). Wipe excess grout from the stones and their joints, using the large sponge. Soak the sponge in clean water, and rinse as necessary.
