Weekend Brunch At The Farm

What you see The Farm that opened in April 2009 has become immensely popular The Farm, Chennaiover time as a lazy weekend option for those in Chennai. Nestled in the constantly developing IT strip of Chennai, The Farm is a 70-acre piece of land owned and managed by Arul Futnani. It recreates the experience of staying or spending the day on a typical farm with cows, poultry, stables, coconut groves, eucalyptus plantations, water bodies, gardens and open spaces with colorful divans. The Farm also has a family dog that flops each time she wants to be fussed over.

What you get The Farm does not believe in the traditional a la carte menu but has a variety of food options available giving guests the flexibility to plan their meal and accompaniments. The cooking style is the outdoor method using charcoal grills and wood fires.

We went to The Farm for dinner. The smell of food from the charcoal grills was quite overwhelming and we could not wait to dig in. We started with pizzas. We were showed how to flatten a pizza base and were asked to make one for ourselves. Boy, it is quite a task and only a few can accomplish the perfect base. The pizzas were then made in wood fired ovens which lent a nice smokiness to the taste. We chose our toppings and garnishes and enjoyed our custom-made pizza. Apart from pizza, we tried some Grilled / Tandoor dishes in both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. There is quite a variety available on the a la carte menu. The beverages available include aerated drinks, fresh juices, lassi, tea like the one from Makaibari in Darjeeling, coffee, espresso, latte etc.

Other must tries at The Farm include Stuffed Paneer, Bruschetta, Stuffed Peppers, Butter Garlic Prawns, Masala Fried Fish, Mutton Tikki and Pork Chops which are simply out of this world. Also sample Curd, Aloo Parathas and Pickle here. The curd here is so tasty that you tend to scoop out more and more each time. For rice-lovers, white rice and Garlic Fried Rice (veg and non-veg) are available. Kids can relish Aloo Tikki Chaat, Bhel Puri, French Fries, Potato Wedges, Onion Rings, Smileys etc. For dessert, there is a range of ice creams to choose from. Chocolate Cake, Chocolate Mousse, Caramelized Bananas and Shrikhand are suitable to satisfy your sweet tooth.

The Farm is also open everyday for lunch. They have a set menu that includes a variety of rotis, rice and a few curries. This caters mostly to the corporate guests since it is situated on the IT strip. On the weekend, there is a different lunch option available which keeps changing. Group bookings for a minimum of 20 people can be organized for any meal based on prior reservation. The restaurant undertakes corporate events, team outings, outdoor catering (specializing in BBQs), kids birthday parties and school excursions. There are a wide range of activities / facilities on The Farm such as a four feet Splash Pool (for kids and adults)The Farm, Chennai which is a make shift pool above the ground, Paint Ball, Volley Ball, Badminton, access to open space for those who want to bring their own sporting equipment and Farm Tours including a visit to the dairy, poultry and stables apart from horse riding for kids.

There are rooms that work as a Bed and Breakfast. The tariff is Rs. 2,000 + taxes for a couple, inclusive of breakfast. The rooms are not in the 5 star category but comfortable, clean and well equipped. There is one restaurant which is open air but covered with netted material.

Our verdict The Farm is the perfect getaway to unwind over the weekend. It is a nice drive down the OMR road. It would be advisable to make reservations before you go, be it to stay over for lunch or dinner. The food is absolutely lip smacking especially the Thin Crust Pizzas, Honey-glazed Pork Chops, Stuffed Parathas and Kebabs. The menu gets updated on a regular basis. The Farm renders its own dairy produce such as Curds, Butter, Ghee, Paneer, Mayonnaise as well as home made pickles. Service is excellent and so are the people. The rooms are simple and comfortable. Parking space is available.
