When you are planning a party that involves complicated directions, signage can help guests find the location and improve the flow of traffic. As you plan signs, it can be helpful to diagram the road route or the paths through a venue to determine the places that will cause confusion. At each point, choose a sign that coordinates with the style of the event and clearly communicates directions. - For an outdoor event or a party with a rustic theme, find planks of weathered, rough wood. Look for pieces that have splintered or cracked edges to add to the ambiance of the event. Use charcoal or paint to write the directions on the sign; even something as simple as "Nick and Katie's Wedding" can indicate where guests should turn. Depending on the tone of your event, you can use a scrawled handwriting font or a more elegant script for signage. Nail each sign to a stake and plant in the ground at important junctions.
- For a party or event that celebrates an individual or a couple, design signs that use a large photo to catch the attention of guests. For a graduation party, for example, you might blow up a photo of the graduate along with the name of the event and an arrow. At weddings and anniversaries, you can use a selection of funny or meaningful photos that will draw attention and serve to build excitement for the event to come. After the event, you can keep the signs as keepsakes.
- If you have a supply of old doors, you can use them to make signs for an event. To make the signs, cut the door in half and attach at the seam with simple hinges. Paint the signs a solid color and add text and decoration that match the theme of the event. This type of sign is good for outdoor events because it can be bolstered with rocks; because you can position the hinged halves to face different directions, you can use both sides of the door at a corner or intersection.
- For indoor signage that directs guests to bathrooms or different places in an event site, use letter garlands. Print out individual letters on small pieces of card stock and attach to a ribbon or twine using paperclips or clothespins, or by stringing the ribbon through a hole in the top of each letter. Use a font that fits the style and theme of the event, and personalize each card with small drawings, fabric flowers or other small scrapbooking elements. Hang the signs on the wall at important places to direct guests; the signs can be taken down easily at the end of the evening.
