How to Kill Thistle in Lawns With Pets
- 1). Remove the top from the tank of a 1 gallon garden sprayer. Set the tank on the ground so it will not easily fall over.
- 2). Fill the tank 1/4 full with water from a garden sprayer.
- 3). Add glyphosate herbicide to the 1 gallon spray tank. Use, as a rule of thumb, 3 ounces of herbicide per gallon to safely kill thistle in a lawn. Place the lid on the spray tank and shake it to mix. Remove the top from the spray tank.
- 4). Fill the tank to the 1 gallon mark with water. Cap the tank once again and shake it to thoroughly mix.
- 5). Spray each individual thistle in the lawn with glyphosate. Choose a time when it is dry and the thistle is actively growing. Direct the spray onto the leaves and stem of the thistle.
- 6). Keep pets out of the area for at least one hour after applying the herbicide spray so it will have a chance to dry. Discourage pets from eating or licking the thistle to avoid having them ingest the herbicide.
- 7). Monitor the dieback of the thistle and reapply the glyphosate herbicide, if necessary, to completely kill the weed.
