Whimsical Birthday Cake Ideas

    Topsy Turvy Cake

    • The Topsy Turvy cake is an appropriate cake for any age. The cake consists of at least three layers that are stacked on top of each other. The stacks are uneven looking and appear as if they are about to slip. Typically created from round cakes, the Topsy Turvy cake can be used for just about any event that needs a little whimsy. Create a Mad Hatter's cake for an "Alice in Wonderland" themed party or simply decorate with dots and other shapes in birthday party colors.

    Fairy Cake

    • Mischievous fairies make for a light-hearted and whimsical birthday cake. A fairy cake works well with a fairy princess, fairy or garden party theme. Buy small fairy dolls, available at toy or craft stores, to decorate a birthday cake. A sheet cake frosted in green icing creates a playground for fairies. Use fondant or silk leaves and flowers to decorate the top of the cake. Candy rocks are also a nice addition. Hide small fairy figures behind leaves and in flower buds.

    Butterflies and Dragonflies

    • Stacked round cakes can take on a whimsical nature by adding beautiful butterflies and colorful dragonflies. Make icing flowers for the cake top and layers. Add nylon butterflies and dragonflies to the cake for a touch of whimsy. Use thin wire attached to a butterfly's body with the other end stuck in the cake to make it appear that a butterfly is in flight.

    People at Play Whimsical Cake

    • Whimsical cakes can show people at play in just about any situation and can encompass practically any theme. A party at a water park can feature a whimsical cake showing small dolls splashing in a swimming pool. A circus party can be made even more fun with the addition of a whimsical cake. Add funny clown figures doing silly acts or making silly faces to the top of a colorful cake.
