How to Grow Peppercorn
- 1). Plant the seeds in a garden flat or pot, placing the seeds about 1/2 inch below the surface. Place the pot in a location where the temperature averages between 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit.
- 2). Water the plant enough to keep the soil damp.
- 3). Apply plant fertilizer to the soil, following the instructions on the packaging regarding the amount you need.
- 4). Till the soil where the pepper is being planted with a tiller. Add 3 inches of compost or topsoil to the location, and mix it into the soil with a rake. Smooth the surface of the soil with the rake.
- 5). Use a hammer to drive stakes into the ground where you are growing each plant. The pepper plant is a climbing plant and needs a structure to grow on, such as stakes or a trellis.
- 6). Use a shovel to dig a hole in the ground in front of the stakes that is big enough to accommodate the root system of each plant.
- 7). Transfer the plants from the flat or pot into the holes, and backfill the holes with soil.
- 8). Water the plants when the soil begins to dry out.
- 9). Use string to tie the stems of the plants loosely to the poles when they grow long enough that they begin to sag or bend over.
