How to Plant Dwarf Monkey Grass

    • 1). Prepare soil two weeks prior to planting dwarf mondo grass sprigs by adding a complete fertilizer to the soil to allow any weed seeds in the soil to germinate.

    • 2). Spray the weeds once they have emerged with a contact herbicide containing glyphosate. Apply complete fertilizer to the soil once the weeds are eliminated and cultivate the fertilizer 6 inches into the soil.

    • 3). Place 3 inches of compost into the weed-free soil and cultivate it 1 foot into the ground. Level the soil with a rake and water thoroughly. Wait two weeks to allow for final weed germination and spray the weeds with the contact herbicide. The soil is now ready for planting.

    • 4). Plant sprigs at least two to four inches apart and water well to establish them into the soil. Apply a pre-emergence herbicide to prevent weeds from germinating while the plants are establishing.

    • 5). Keep soil moist to encourage the best growth. Apply a controlled-release or organic fertilizer during the spring and summer and 1/2 inch of compost annually.

    • 6). Mow your dwarf monkey grass only once a year in late winter.
