How to Take the Smell of Mothballs Out of a Room

    • 1). Remove any remaining mothballs from the room. As long as you have the mothballs in the room, you will not be able to get rid of the odor.

    • 2). Open windows in the room to let fresh air in to cleanse the air. If you can open a door or window in another room you can create a cross breeze to expedite getting the air from the home.

    • 3). Apply some lavender or peppermint essential oil to a cold light bulb and put it in the light fixture in the room. When the light is on, the oil will heat up and create a pleasant scent in the room, which can help to get rid of the mothball smell.

    • 4). Set out bowls of vinegar in the room. Let the bowls sit for 24 hours to neutralize the air in the room.

    • 5). Place broken pieces of charcoal in bowls around the room. It will absorb the odors of the mothballs. Do not use the fast light charcoal because it has smelly lighter fluid in it.

    • 6). Sprinkle baking soda around the room. Let it sit for a few hours before vacuuming it up.
