How to Play "Game of Life" for the PC

    • 1). Download and install Java onto your computer (see "Resources").

    • 2). Go to John Conway's site and download and install "The Game of Life" (see "Resources."

    • 3). Open the "game."

    • 4). Click on a square within the grid to change it from "dead" to "alive." A living square must touch at least two other living squares to stay alive. At the same time, if it touches more than four living squares, it will die. A dead square touching at least three living squares will also come to life. These are the only rules of the game.

    • 5). Unpause the game to see how your "Petri dish" develops. Even from simple shapes of five living cells, complex patterns can form.
