- 1). Hold a clean cloth over the scratch until the bleeding stops. Most scratches will stop bleeding in a few minutes.
- 2). Wash the wound thoroughly but gently with warm water and antibacterial soap. This helps prevent infection.
- 3). Remove any debris or dirt you can see in the wound by rubbing it with a wet washcloth.
- 4). Apply antibacterial ointment to the wound to help your body battle possible infections.
- 5). Cover the scratch with a bandage if it is on an area of your body that frequently gets dirty, like your hands. If it is on your face or another area that stays clean, you can leave it exposed.
- 6). Replace your bandage each day or whenever it gets dirty, and rinse the wound each time. Re-apply antibacterial ointment as well. If you take care of your scratch, it should heal more rapidly.
