How to Remove Mothball Odors
- 1). Hang the item affected by the smell of mothballs outside on a warm, sunny day. Keep the fabric out of direct sunlight.
- 2). Let the item hang for several hours. The fresh air will help air out the fabric. Alternatively, place the fabric in the dryer and tumble dry with no heat for several cycles.
- 3). Launder the item in your washing machine as you normally would, but add 1 cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. White vinegar will naturally remove odors.
- 1). Fill a spray bottle with undiluted white vinegar and mist the hard surface -- such as wood, walls, counter tops and tiles -- with the vinegar. Let the vinegar air-dry on the surface. If the odor remains, proceed with the remaining steps.
- 2). Dampen a clean sponge with cool water and lightly dampen the hard surface.
- 3). Sprinkle a liberal amount of baking soda directly on the damp surface and let dry for half an hour.
- 4). Brush the baking soda off the surface and repeat the process if needed.
- 1). Pour undiluted white vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray the inside of the closets, cabinets and drawers with the vinegar.
- 2). Allow the item to dry with the doors or drawers open.
- 3). Fill cabinets and drawers with crumbled pieces of newspaper. Close the doors and let sit for 24 hours. Repeat the process as needed.
- 1). Open doors and windows on a warm sunny day and leave them open for several hours. This will help air out the mothball odor.
- 2). Place small bowls of white vinegar around your home for 24 hours to absorb the odors.
- 3). Sprinkle non-toxic, mothball deodorizer granules around your home; they are designed to eliminate the unpleasant odors associated with mothballs.
