- 1). Decide which direction you want your blinds to hang in. You can opt for vertical blinds, which are the most common choice for large sliding glass doors, or horizontal blinds. With horizontal blinds you will encounter a host of other questions and options. Horizontal blinds offer fewer options for customization.
- 2). Consider the lighting in the room. When comparing blinds, one of the most important factors is how they let light into the room. Aluminum blinds can offer privacy, but tend to allow a lot of light through. Wood and faux wood blinds are heavier and provide a darker atmosphere when closed.
- 3). Select a color or range of colors that will work best with your decor. Compare the available color options for each type of blinds, and narrow down your selection to those that complement the other features in your room. If the standard white aluminum blinds won't cut it for your home design, you may want to consider the many warm finishes of wood blinds. Aluminum, vinyl and vertical blinds are all available in a wide range of colors as well.
- 4). Evaluate the environment. Faux wood blinds are sturdy, easy to clean and stand up well to humid environments such as those found in kitchens and bathrooms. Aluminum blinds can be a hassle to clean and aren't very durable, so these might not be the best choice for rooms with lots of busy children and messes. Vertical blinds typically hang to the floor and, while easier to clean, can hang at the perfect height for children and dogs to disrupt and even break them.
