Door Slab Installation

    Removing the Door

    • Remove the door from the jamb by inserting a nail or nail set into the bottom of each hinge and tapping lightly with a hammer to remove the pins. After the door is removed, take off the hinges on the jamb with a screwdriver. If the hinges are rusty, use a lightweight oil to loosen them.

    Installing the Hinges

    • Mark out the hinges on the new door by placing the doors side by side (or measure with a tape) and marking the new door with a sharp pencil and a square. With a chisel and a hammer, pound an outline of the hinges on to the door. You can also purchase hinge markers that impress the outline of the hinge. Chisel lines about 1/8 inch deep across the hinge area every 1/4 inch. This will help you control the depth of the mortise. Remove enough material to install the hinge flush. Once all the hinges are cut in, drill pilot holes to receive the screws, keeping the holes centered. Home stores sell center punches that make this easier to do. Attach the hinges to the jamb and the door with a drill or screwdriver.

    Installing the Door

    • Align the hinges and tap in the hinge pins with a hammer. Open and close the door to check for binding. If the door binds, loosen the hinge on the jamb and slip in a thin cardboard shim. If shimming does not resolve the binding, shave a little off the door with a plane. Shims behind the entire hinge will help produce an even gap around the door when your opening is not square. Install the lock set and the job is complete.
