How to Fix the Drain Tube in a Refrigerator
- 1). Unplug your refrigerator from the electrical outlet. If the outlet is in a hard-to-reach location, kill the power for the refrigerator by cutting off the electric supply for the circuit where the refrigerator is plugged in at the main circuit breaker.
- 2). Open the refrigerator door. Remove any food or other objects on the lowest shelf. Pull any crispers or drawers out of the bottom level. Pull the bottom shelf out of the unit by lifting it up and carefully pulling it out of the appliance. Loosen any clips holding the shelf in place, if needed, first.
- 3). Look for the drain tube opening. This will be a small opening about the size of a dime located at the lowest part of the refrigerator. This may be at the side or center of the refrigerator panel, depending on the model. If the bottom of the refrigerator is covered with water or condensation, wipe it up with a towel to help remove the liquid and locate the drain.
- 4). Insert a length of plastic tubing into the drain tube opening. Continue pushing the tubing through until you feel it meet the blockage. Move the tubing back and forth against the blockage until you feel it give way.
- 5). Loosen the grill at the bottom of the refrigerator. This may clip into place or be held place by screws that need to be loosened first. Pull the grill off the refrigerator. Reach underneath the appliance and pull out the plastic drain pan. Be careful, as it may be full of liquid. Empty it into the nearest sink. Replace the pan.
- 6). Mix a capful of bleach in 1 cup of warm water. Slowly pour the water into the refrigerator drain. Empty out the drain pan. Replace the drain pan and grill.
- 7). Replace the shelf and drawers in the refrigerator. Replace any food. Restore power to the refrigerator.
