How to Attach a Reducer Threshold

    Prepping the Threshold

    • 1). Measure the difference between the hardwood and the adjoining floor. This will indicate the specific thickness of reducer threshold required to fit the edge of your floor to create a smooth transition.

    • 2). Select the reducer that is the right thickness and finish color. Measure the width of the edge of the floor. Measure and mark the threshold to the same length as the width of the edge of the floor. Position the threshold on the table of your miter saw. Set the saw to 90 degrees and cut the threshold off on the line you marked.

    • 3). Apply a coat of stain and clear finish to the cut ends of the threshold with a small art brush. Allow it to dry according to the label instructions before applying the threshold.

    Installing the Threshold

    • 1). Dry-fit the reducer threshold to the edge of the floor, slipping the tongue of the thick edge of the reducer into the groove along the edge of the flooring. Check it for thickness and width. Remove the threshold from the edge of the floor.

    • 2). Apply a thin bead of silicone caulk along the bottom of the threshold with a caulking gun. Apply steady pressure to the trigger to ensure a consistent bead. Depress the thumb button to relieve the pressure at the end of the bead.

    • 3). Refit the threshold to the edge of the floor, fitting the tongue firmly into the groove. Press the threshold down firmly to spread the silicone underneath the threshold to adhere the threshold to the floor. Silicone will stick to almost any surface, including tile, wood, masonry and carpet.

    • 4). Allow at least 4 hours, preferably 24, before allowing traffic back on the floor. This will allow the silicone to dry completely.
