How to Anchor a Porch Railing Post to Concrete

    • 1). Set the post in the exact position that it needs to be anchored. Use a black marker to trace the interior of the predrilled, elongated holes of the post.

    • 2). Install a concrete drill bit into a hammer drill. Use a bit that is the size of the anchors you are using. Place a piece of painter's tape to indicate the depth that the hole needs to be drilled. This should be equal to the length of the concrete anchor, the thickness of the steel plate and a additional 3/8 inch.

    • 3). Drill the holes for the anchor bolts in the center of the elongated holes. This will allow for slight adjustment of the porch railing.

    • 4). Blow out the holes with a can of compressed air or use a vacuum to remove the concrete dust from the holes. Tap the concrete anchors into the holes so that the anchor is even with the top of concrete.

    • 5). Secure the post to the concrete anchor with bolts and lock washers that fit the anchor. Tighten the bolts using a socket wrench.
