Should YOU Be Afraid of Twitter?

This article is for new users of Twitter or those thinking of starting to use Twitter.
It addresses the concerns people have voiced to me over the last 12 months when teaching social marketing class.
Twitter is micro blogging.
It is considered a viable platform for those who want to connect and communicate.
When I teach classes I noticed that people seem concerned about a few things on Twitter.
Everyone on the internet is never what it seems.
People want to know exactly what they are getting into before they are willing to participate.
One concern is that it can be a huge time suck.
People are concerned that they will spend hours and hours on Twitter with nothing to show for it.
This is simple.
Spend a few minutes on Twitter each day.
Yes, I said minutes.
Really, just minutes.
You can only type 140 characters at a time.
You are not going sell your book, course or high end ticket event to anyone like this.
You can connect with people and get permission to take it further and offline.
Spend a few minutes checking out the follows and making a few comments.
Another concern is lawsuits.
Yes, it I has finally happened.
A woman is being sued for saying an apartment has mold and the realty company does not care.
She had 40 followers at the time.
They claim she damaged their reputation.
Maybe it's a really small town.
I have no idea why this law suit is happening.
The bottom line is that it never hurts to have manners.
Complain to the business that treated you poorly, not to some online system.
Yes, there are a few companies who will come and help you when you complain on Twitter.
Those companies are far and few between.
How many can you actually name? Comcast and Hostgater are the only two I can name.
I am sure there are more.
If I have a problem I am going straight to the company, not Twitter.
Everyone has to make smart choices to resolve their problems.
If you are fearful of being on Twitter, always remember that you have a choice.
Social marketing and social networking are not for everyone.
It seems like all the cool kids are doing it, but you can make the choice for yourself.
