How to Hang Workshop Lighting
- 1). Consider the type of work that is completed in the workshop. Work that requires the worker to be able to see color correctly, such as painting, will benefit from color corrected fluorescent lighting. If the workshop is used for painting or staining of wood to specific colors, true color lighting is required. Purchase sample true color bulbs and install them in portable lighting fixture. Set the fixture on top of a ladder to get an idea of what kind of light each bulb will produce.
- 2). Plan the location of the lighting. Shadows make it difficult to work. When using power tools, shadows can be dangerous. Workshop lighting should be mounted where it will shine directly on the working surface or cast shadows away from the working surface. Location can be checked prior to installation with a portable flood light. Stand on a ladder with the portable flood light and shine the light in the direction that the installed lights would be angled. Have a helper stand at each of the workstations to check for shadows.
- 3). Determine the need for move ability. Workshops with several different workstations may need light in different areas of the workshop at different times. Either each workstation is outfitted with its own set of lights or lights are mounted in a central location and redirected as needed. Track lighting is an option for this type of workshop installation. Lights can be moved along the track and they are hinged so that the direction of the light can be turned in any direction needed. Fluorescent bulbs are also available for this type of light fixture.
