Fill a bucket with equal parts lemon juice and cool water. Place laundry with hard water stains in the bucket and allow the garments to soak in the lemon juice solution for 30 minutes. The lemon juice solution will remove any stains caused by iron or other minerals in the hard water. - 2). Remove your clothing from the lemon juice solution and place it in your washing machine. Wash with the hottest water allowed for your garments, and use a low-sudsing phosphate laundry detergent. This type of detergent cleans clothing washed in hard water better then most other detergents.
- 3). Add 1 cup of white vinegar to your washing machine's rinse cycle. The vinegar will brighten your clothing, helping to remove the gray, dingy look caused by hard water.

Hang your laundry outdoors to dry. Not only does the fresh air make your laundry smell fresher, but the sun is a natural bleaching agent which will help to lighten hard water stains.
