How to Get Diesel Exhaust Out of Hair With Shampoo
- 1). Combine a quarter cup vinegar and a tablespoon of baking soda in a mixing bowl. Stir with a spoon until it forms a fluid paste. For long hair, double the mixture. Baking soda will neutralize the smell of diesel exhaust and vinegar will remove pollutants.
- 2). Pour a quarter cup of clarifying shampoo, such as Prell, or dishwashing liquid into the bowl with the baking soda mixture. Add more shampoo as necessary to accommodate longer hair. Stir until the mixture forms a cohesive mass.
- 3). Wet hair thoroughly using lukewarm water. Apply the shampoo mixture to the hair and massage into the scalp and hair with the pads of the fingers. Leave on the hair for three to five minutes. Comb through to more evenly distribute the mixture. Rinse completely and repeat if necessary to remove the diesel exhaust from the hair.
- 4). Shampoo with a regular conditioning cleanser to remove excess vinegar and baking soda. Repeat if necessary to remove any residual smell or buildup. Follow with a conditioner to close the cuticle, or outer layer of the hair, and further neutralize the odor. Rinse completely, dry and style the hair as usual.
