Spring Fever
It happens to all home owners.
You purchase a new home and have a yard that might not suite your taste.
Or you've recently built a new house, and the yard is bare.
When "Spring Fever" rolls around many want to jump into creating the yard of their dreams.
Jumping in is great except for one thing.
Without proper time spent analyzing your yard, you could make mistakes that will cost you time and money.
My mother gave me some advice years ago.
She said "wait one year".
What she meant was to wait one year before tearing into my yard.
She had good reasoning for this.
By waiting I knew exactly how the sun fell in my yard, where it was protected or unprotected from the elements.
I knew where the water ran in the springtime, which has allowed me to choose an excellent spot for a pond, or maybe a dry stream bed.
(I haven't quite decided what I want.
) I also had the time to really think about what I wanted.
Things like whether a tree would work or obscure the view.
I had time to make plant choices.
This ultimately saved money.
When I went to the nursery I wasn't randomly picking plants.
(This method can surprise you at the register.
) Waiting may seem agonizing, but it is well worth the time.
When you are finally ready to tackle the job of creating your oasis you will be ready.
You will know what you want.
You will more than likely have saved yourself time and money.
Remember that you do not want to have to have to sod a bed that you decide you don't want.
You won't have to dismantle and fill the pond that doesn't quite work well.
You won't wonder why certain plants aren't doing well in the location you chose for them.
So take your time, relax and contemplate your yard.
Watch what your family does with the space.
Design accordingly.
You will discover so much about yourself through this process.
Happy designing!
