How to Write a Letter of Leniency
- 1). Format your letter by setting the margins to one inch; this is the standard for business and legal letters.
- 2). Type your address without your name. Skip a space, then type the date with the month spelled out. Skip another space.
- 3). Type the judge's name and title, the court's name, and the address of the court. Skip an additional space.
- 4). Type "Honorable Judge (Name):" and skip another space.
- 5). Begin the letter by identifying the defendant and the case number, as well as what the charges are.
- 6). Respectfully request leniency, and explain the circumstances. Be concrete and give specific details.
- 7). Thank the judge for her time, and provide your contact information in case the court needs further information.
- 8). Conclude the letter by typing "Respectfully," skip three line spaces, then type your name. Then sign above your typed name.
