Q:Can I use regular a+d ointment [for diaper rash] or does it have to be a+d with vitamins a&d? Also will these brands cause any color loss? I got a tattoo two days ago and have been using the regular a+d ointment.
A: Actually, any A&D ointment contains the A and D vitamins, thus the name. But I was always told during my apprenticeship that the A&D commonly found in the baby aisle contained products that would inhibit healing and that only medical grade A+D ointment was acceptable.

However, over the years since then, I have found that the medical grade ointment is difficult for the average person to find, including myself, and I decided to try the regular A&D designed for diaper rash. I found it to successfully heal my tattoos with little to no color loss as long as it's used very sparingly, as with any ointment.

Just be aware that A&D is petroleum-based and contains lanolin, two ingredients that potentially can cause irritation, allergic reaction or color loss. But since most people don't have a problem with it, I would say that it is safe to give it a try. If you break out or start noticing color loss, discontinue use. Keep in mind that when your tattoo starts peeling, the flakes will contain bits of ink - that is not the same as losing color; it's a natural part of the healing process.
