Dodsferd - "Death Set The Beginning Of My Journey

About.com Rating

Dodsferd is a very prolific but enigmatic artist. The one man Greek black metal band has now released three albums in two years, but refuses to have an internet presence. There's a fan site or two, but nothing official.

Death Set The Beginning Of My Journey is the first in a planned trilogy (the next CD is already done and set for an early 2009 release.) Dodsferd's brand of black metal is raw and aggressive, but has a lot of groove.

It's damn near black and roll, especially songs like "I Can Easily Destroy All The Things I Have Created," which under the brutality is really catchy.

Wrath's songwriting style tilts toward the epic, with six tracks clocking in at anywhere from 6 to 9 plus minutes in length. The riffs keep coming, and the songs fly by with no sign of bloat or self-indulgence.

The vocals on Death Set The Beginning Of My Journey are very effective. Instead of using the exact same black metal howls all the way through, Wrath uses a lot of variety. From anger to disgust to desperation, he conveys many different emotions. Churning out so much material in a short time could have a diluting effect, but Dodsferd's frequent output so far hasn't lessened the quality of the releases.

(released November 18, 2008 on Moribund Records)
