How do I Learn Portuguese in Salvador?

    • 1). Sign up for a Portuguese language class. You can find a list of schools in Salvador on the website Transitions Abroad. Limit your classroom time to a few hours each day so you can spend more time interacting with the language in the city. You can do an intensive Portuguese class anywhere in the world, so use the opportunity to practice Portuguese with locals. Brazilians are notoriously friendly and few will pass up the opportunity to chat with foreigners.

    • 2). Find a tutor or language exchange partner. If you can't afford a one-on-one tutor, find someone interested in learning English and set up a language exchange. If you have local friends, you may be invited to parties and events where you can meet other Brazilians who can help you practice and perfect your Portuguese.

    • 3). Get involved with cultural activities. Take some dance classes, go to music performances or sign up for a cooking class. Salvador is full of opportunities to experience music, dance and culture. The entire country of Brazil produces excellent Portuguese language music, such as Bossa Nova and Samba. Enjoy the festivities and challenge yourself while having fun. Learn the language within the context of unique cultural traditions and use your Portuguese to go beyond the typical tourist experience.
