- 1). Measure the height of your bar counter. A table-height bar is 30 inches tall, a counter-height bar is 36 inches tall, and a tall bar is 42 inches tall. Look for bar stools with seats that are about 10 inches below the bottom of your bar counter.
- 2). Measure the width of your bar counter to determine how many bar stools you'll need. The National Kitchen & Bath Association recommends one bar stool for every two feet of bar width to provide comfortable seating.
- 3). Shop for bar stools that complement the style of your kitchen. For instance, if you have a Tuscan-style kitchen, sleek steel-and-leather bar stools will look out of place.
- 4). Try out the bar stools for comfort. Although you may like the look of backless stools, you may find chair-style stools more comfortable. Consider whether you want stools that swivel for easier access.
