How to Use Sodium Carbonate in Homemade Laundry Soap

- 1). Grate a bar of soap, such as Fels Naptha, Zote or Ivory, and dissolve it in 6 cups of hot water, in a large pot on the stove.
- 2). Add 1/2 cup of sodium carbonate and 1/2 cup of sodium borate or borax to the mixture after the soap completely dissolves.
- 3). Stir the mixture over a low heat. Remove from the heat when all ingredients have dissolved.
- 4). Pour 4 cups of hot water into a clean, empty bucket.
- 5). Add the soap mixture to the bucket and stir.
- 6). Fill the bucket with water, to make 2 gallons of laundry detergent.
- 7). Cover the bucket and let the mixture set for one day. Use 1/2 cup per load of laundry.
