How to Use Sodium Carbonate in Homemade Laundry Soap

    • 1). Grate a bar of soap, such as Fels Naptha, Zote or Ivory, and dissolve it in 6 cups of hot water, in a large pot on the stove.

    • 2). Add 1/2 cup of sodium carbonate and 1/2 cup of sodium borate or borax to the mixture after the soap completely dissolves.

    • 3). Stir the mixture over a low heat. Remove from the heat when all ingredients have dissolved.

    • 4). Pour 4 cups of hot water into a clean, empty bucket.

    • 5). Add the soap mixture to the bucket and stir.

    • 6). Fill the bucket with water, to make 2 gallons of laundry detergent.

    • 7). Cover the bucket and let the mixture set for one day. Use 1/2 cup per load of laundry.
