How to Clean a Gravestone Safely
- 1). Evaluate the gravestone's material. The material used in new gravestones, a dense granite, stands up to more vigorous cleaning. If in doubt, use the gentlest cleaning methods possible.
- 2). Soak the stone with water. A gentle garden hose spray or dousing from a bucket until the stone reaches saturation prepares it for cleaning.
- 3). Scrub at the stone with a soft natural or nylon fiber brush. Continue soaking the stone so that the surface remains saturated throughout the process. Simple scrubbing removes dirt and lichen growth without the need for damaging cleaners.
