How to Fix a Defective Lamp Cord
- 1). Make sure the lamp is unplugged. Unscrew the socket at the top of the lamp. The socket is what the light bulb is screwed into. It is attached to a threaded rod that runs up through the center of the lamp. Pull up some of the slack of the cord to make the socket easier to work on.
- 2). Remove the outer sleeve that surrounds the socket.
- 3). Disconnect the two wires that are wrapped around the screws on either side of the socket by loosening the screws with a screwdriver.
- 4). Pull the cord out through the bottom of the lamp. Depending on the lamp, there may be a bottom on the base that is held on by a screw or bolt. Remove the screw or bolt with a screwdriver or wrench, then pull out the cord.
- 5). Insert a hanger through the top of the lamp rod and out the bottom. Attach the new cord to the hanger and pull it up through the rod.
- 6). Separate the two wires of the cord and strip the outer coating off using wire strippers.
- 7). Loop one wire around each screw on the socket and tighten with a screwdriver. Replace the outer sleeve. Screw the socket back onto the rod.
