Silverfish Pesticides
- Silverfish are sometimes also called bristletails in reference to the three tail-like appendages attached to the end of their abdomen. Their bodies are covered with silver metallic scales, and they can move rapidly. Silverfish can live for weeks without food and water and prefer humid, cool environments.
- Numerous pesticides can be used to control silverfish populations. Diatomaceous earth and silica aerogel are abrasive desiccants that cause silverfish to dehydrate and ultimately die. Another option is synthetic pyrethroids, including deltamethrin, cyfluthrin, sumithrin and tralomethrin, which are available as water-based sprays. Additional commercial pesticides include chlorpyrifos, diazinon, malathion and propoxur. For best control, use pesticides around baseboards, closets and on walls and floors around water piping.
- Never use pesticides without first reading and following all safety warnings. Use and store pesticides in places inaccessible to children and pets. Dispose of pesticide containers as directed.
