- 1). Make a hole wide enough to easily accommodate the root ball and deep enough to plant the vine at its original level.
- 2). Remove half of the loose soil and replace it with organic compost.
- 3). Place the vine's root ball into the hole and cover it with soil. Pat it down firmly and water until the soil feels evenly moist.
- 4). Spread a 3-inch layer of organic compost under the vine, beginning 3 inches from its base.
- 5). Provide supplemental water when the top inch of soil no longer sticks to your finger.
- 6). Trim the vine to the desired size during late winter. Cut the oldest, woodiest portions back to soil level, which stimulates new growth. Also prune away dead or damaged parts of the vine.
- 7). Sprinkle 1/4 cup of 12-12-12 fertilizer over the soil beneath the purple trumpet vine each spring. Keep the fertilizer at least 3 inches away from the stem and foliage. Water thoroughly after feeding.
