How to Make Cobblestone Support Columns

    • 1). Determine the location of the columns and mix the mortar according to the manufacturer's directions.

    • 2). Build a column, using four concrete blocks to form a square. Stagger the block ends as you go up, to ensure the strongest possible column. Check for level with each course of blocks.

    • 3). Let the mortar set until it's slightly hard, then use the jointing tool to smooth out the mortar between the courses of block. Let it dry completely.

    • 4). Begin at the bottom and spread a 1/2- to 3/4-inch bed of mortar over the blocks. Work in small areas so the mortar doesn't have a chance to dry out.

    • 5). Trowel on a 1/2-inch bed of mortar on the back of each cobblestone and press it into place. This is called "buttering" the stone. Stagger the cobblestones and alternate the colors for a true cobbled look. Let dry completely.

    • 6). Apply mortar between the cobblestones by using a grout bag and squeezing the grout into each crevice. Let the grout set until it's slightly hard. Clean and smooth with the joint tool. Finish by whisking the entire column to free all remaining bits of grout.
