How to Install a Ceramic Backsplash

    Preparation

    • 1). Remove all light switch or outlet panels in the backsplash area. Lightly sand the area with to increase adhesive ability. Dust with a damp cloth.

    • 2). Find the central focal point of your backsplash—this may be over the stove, sink or along a bench, depending on the kitchen. Find the center of the focal point and draw a horizontal line, using the level and pencil, through the center, and a vertical line, so that there is a cross at the central point. Divide your backsplash area like this into quadrants.

    • 3). Dry-lay your ceramic tiles on the floor in the desired design to make sure they’ll fit in the required area. Use the measuring tape to make certain the design will fit. Adjust as necessary until you are happy with the design.

    Tiling

    • 1). Mix your thin set per the manufacturer’s directions, enough for around half an hour of work. Apply thin set in a 1/4-inch layer to the wall, starting from the border of the backsplash that meets the counter. Set tile spacers between the counter and the first row of tiles. Gently press each tile into the thin set, slightly twisting it before setting it into position. Work from the center line outwards.

    • 2). Apply more thin set to the wall, working your way upwards. Place the tiles into the thin set, until all of the whole tiles are set. Measure and cut the tiles needing to be cut with a tile cutter and place them as you go. Butter the backs of the cut tiles with thin set and set them in place. Allow to cure for 24 hours once all tiles are set.

    • 3). Mix unsanded grout per the manufacturer's instructions. Scoop grout onto the grout float, then work it into the tile joints, after having taken out spacers. Hold the grout float diagonally to the tile joints and sweep the grout into the joints. Do not apply grout to the spaces between the tile and the counter or between the tile and any cabinets or power outlets.

    • 4). Wipe excess grout off with a sponge and let set for 30 minutes. A haze will appear on the tiles; buff off with the sponge to remove the final traces of grout.

    • 5). Apply caulk to the spaces between the ceramic tiles and the counter, power outlets or cabinets, then smooth with a wet finger. Wipe off any excess, then let cure for 24 hours. Give the whole kitchen backsplash a good clean, and it's ready for use.
