Home Remedies to Clean an Above Ground Pool

    Where to Start

    • Keeping a pool liner clean is essential, not just on your purse strings, but for the overall health of the pool. Liners that are slimy or covered with mildew will increase the likelihood of poor water quality as well as the failure of the liner itself. Cleaning the liner at the beginning of the season is necessary, and can be quite easy to do with products already in the home. When cleaning the liner, make sure you drain the water accumulated in the pool from the winter months. It is best if there is no more than an inch or two of water left in the pool. Also, clean out any debris such as leaves or grass that may have gotten into the pool.

    Liner Maintenance

    • The easiest way to begin is to climb into the empty pool. Make sure you are either barefoot or are wearing a soft soled shoe so as not to damage the liner. There are a number of products you can mix to create a gentle and effective cleanser. Combine vinegar, baking soda and hot water as a scrubbing solution to leave the liner not only clean, but also smelling better. Diluting bleach with water, a one to five ratio, is another excellent way to clean a liner without destroying it. You could also mix liquid dish washing detergent in warm water as a gentle cleanser. A sponge mop or a cleaning cloth is best, since both are extremely soft and will not damage the liner. Clean the walls from top to bottom, making sure to get under the rail that goes around the top of the pool and the floor of the liner as well.

    Finishing

    • Once the entire liner is clean, make sure to rinse thoroughly and drain the dirty water from the pool. Once this is finished, you can fill the pool up and begin to enjoy the summer. Remember, time taken at the beginning of the season can save money and time in the end.
