How to Make a Simple Crib Canopy
- 1). Measure the length and width of your crib. Determine where you would like the canopy to start hanging from, and measure downward to the crib.
- 2). Cut your fabric or mesh into two identical-sized pieces with the scissors based on how wide your crib is and how high it will hang. Typically, a canopy starts approximately 3 feet above the crib, with the sides hanging down. The canopy should cover about 1/3 the length of the crib.
- 3). Lay the two pieces of fabric or mesh on top of one another so that the patterns are facing one another. Sew the pieces together, using your sewing kit or sewing machine, leaving a 1-inch piece unsewn. Turn the sewn fabric inside out through the small 1-inch hole, so that the pattern of the fabric (or mesh) is outwards. This will hide the stitch marks from the outside. Then, sew up the small 1-inch hole.
- 4). Attach an eye hook to the end of each dowel rod by screwing them in tightly. Then, attach a heavy-duty string or rope to each eye hook. This should be very sturdy so that it does not come down on the baby in the crib. Be sure to tie the string or rope securely to the two ends.
- 5). Drill the two eye hooks into the ceiling, centered above the crib. This should start at one end of the crib and end at about 1/3 of the length of the crib.
- 6). Hang the dowel rod and string/rope from the eye hooks installed into the ceiling.
- 7). Lay the fabric or mesh piece over the dowel rod so that it is evenly distributed over both sides of the crib.
- 8). Place a piece of adhesive-backed velcro on each corner of the fabric and put it on the inside so it is not visible. Attach the opposite side (the fuzzy side) of the velcro material onto the exterior of the crib. Make sure that they line up, and be sure that the fabric is tight with the crib exterior. This will keep the fabric or mesh from falling or being blown into the crib with your baby, ensuring your baby's safety.
