Felt Cutlery Craft
- Embellish a placemat with a set of utensils cut from felt. For a set of four placemats, sew two rectangles of felt -- in your choice of color and pattern -- with embroidery thread. Use contrasting colors to make a reversible placemat. Cut a knife, a fork and a spoon out of another color of felt. With a hot glue gun, glue the felt cutouts onto each placemat. Ideas for placement include all three utensils in the middle of the mat, a standard table setting, or horizontal placement with one on top of each other.
- Use a template -- make your own or look for one online or in sewing supply stores -- to create felt chair cushions. Sew colorful felt cutouts of cutlery onto the cushions. One idea is to make a set out of the same color scheme but vary the pattern for each cushion. For instance, one cushion decorated with forks, one with knives, one with spoons and a final one with a combination of the three. This idea works well for children's tables.
- Design your own felt book cover and embellish it with a silver spoon. One idea is to use black or red felt sewn with a contrasting color of embroidery thread. Make your own template according to the size of book you wish to cover. Add a felt spoon to the front of the cover, sew it with silver embroidery thread, and add a silver sequin or two for a little shine. Another idea is to position the spoon to act as a pocket for a bookmark.
- Sew mini forks, knives and spoons and stuff them with cotton. Affix a magnet to the back of each finished piece with a hot glue gun. Or, sew a collection of cutlery and dishware for kids to play with. Include plates, cups, cutlery and napkins. The felt cutlery and dishware set can be matched with a wooden set of play food for a gift. Another idea is to customize kitchen towels with felt cutouts of cutlery. Or, make a felt collage of kitchen-related items, including cutlery; frame it; and hang it in the kitchen or give it as a gift.
