About Marge Simpson

    Family

    • Marge Bouvier Simpson is the wife of Homer Simpson, and mother of Bart, Maggie and Lisa. Her two sisters, who live together and work at the Springfield Dept. of Motor Vehicles, are Patty and Selma. Less well-known are the names of her parents: Clancy and Jacqueline Bouvier.

    The Voice Behind the Character

    • The character of Marge Simpson is voiced by Julie Kavner, who has been engaged in the role since the show's earliest days as a bit for the Tracey Ullman Show in 1987. This same actress does all the Bouvier women: Marge, Patty, Selma and Jacqueline.

    The Character

    • Marge is the stereotypical housewife, and is therefore usually the straight woman for Homer's stupidity, Bart's troublemaking or Lisa's unconventionality. She vies with Lisa as the most moralistic of the Simpson family, and when compared to other residents of Springfield she is moral without being either as narrow-minded or hypocritical as other characters. She is caring and nurturing--and above all patient--although she does lose her temper with Bart or Homer from time to time.

    Marge and Work

    • Marge is almost always depicted as a homemaker, but she has held a number of jobs for the duration of a single episode. These include working at the nuclear power plant, becoming a policewoman, running a pretzel business, becoming a realtor and working in an erotic bakery. She also once became a competitive bodybuilder.

    Marge in the Real World

    • The Simpson family received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2000. Kavner won a 1992 Emmy and a 2004 Young Artist Award for her work as Marge Simpson. Marge herself has been ranked as the top TV Mom of all-time by both FOX and Entertainment Weekly.
