How to Refinish a Wooden Crate With Wire

    • 1). Remove loose, peeling paint by scraping it away with a putty knife. Remove any remaining bits of loose paint and smooth any splintering areas of the wooden crate by sanding with 120-grit sandpaper.

    • 2). Lay the wooden crate on top of a heavy-duty fabric drop-cloth.

    • 3). Remove saw dust that may interfere with adhesion by wiping down the crate with a tack cloth.

    • 4). Spray the wire with etching primer. Do not worry about getting over spray on the wooden portion of the crate as you will paint over this later. Allow the etching primer to dry and cure for four hours.

    • 5). Apply latex primer to the wooden portion of the crate using a 2- to 3-inch latex paintbrush. Do not worry about getting latex primer on the wire, as you will coat it will paint later. Allow the surface to dry for two hours.

    • 6). Wash the latex paintbrush with water.

    • 7). Apply spray acrylic paint to the wire as you did the primer in step four. Do not worry about getting paint over spray on the wooden portion of the crate. Allow the paint to dry for fours hours.

    • 8). Cover the wire with blue painter's tape.

    • 9). Apply latex paint to the wooden portion of the crate using a 2- to 3-inch latex paintbrush. Allow the surface to dry for two hours.
