Cleaning Patio Cushions

    Mixing the Solution

    • A strong cleaning solution that you can make easily at home is your best ammunition for cleaning molds, mildew, stains and dirt from patio cushions made from vinyl. Mix 1 tsp. dishwashing detergent, a quart of warm water and 1 tsp. of Borax powder in a bucket. Stir well and pour the contents into an empty spray bottle.

    Spray Your Heart Out

    • Spray generously onto both sides of each cushion. If you run out of solution, make some more. Pay special attention to the nooks and crannies, making sure to spray there as well. Let the solution soak for 15 minutes.

    Rinsing

    • With your garden hose nozzle set to the highest setting for a fast and furious spray, rinse the cushions. Make sure to rinse both sides off.

    Cleaning Canvas and Cloth Cushions

    • If you were forward-thinking enough to have canvas or cloth covers adorning your patio cushions, you can simply peel them off and pop them in the washer. If the covers don't come off, rub a bar of soap unto a scrub brush and begin scrubbing until you have a lot of lather built up before rinsing with your hose.

    Drying

    • To dry the cushions, it is best to stand them up on edge. When they are dried to the point of light dampness, spraying fabric protector (Scotch Guard works well) on the cushions will help keep them from getting as dirty the next time.
