How to Replace the Overflow Valve on a Toilet

    • 1). Turn the water valve clockwise to cut off the toilet's water supply. Remove the tank lid. Flush the toilet and hold the handle down to allow as much water as possible to escape. Soak up any remaining water in the tank.

    • 2). Place the towel on the floor beneath the connection of the water supply to the tank. This will catch any remaining water from the tank when you remove the water supply line. Loosen the nut with the pliers and finish unscrewing it by hand. Disconnect the supply line from the tank.

    • 3). Reach inside the tank with the screwdriver and loosen both mounting bolts on the tank bottom, while holding the nut beneath the tank with the wrench. Carefully lift the tank from the toilet bowl and gently lay the tank on its back on a towel.

    • 4). Reach into the tank and remove the large rubber gasket around the flange nut on the tank bottom. Loosen and remove the flange nut, using the pliers if necessary. Remove the overflow tube and replace it with the new one.

    • 5). Reconnect the flange nut and rubber gasket. Attach the chain from the overflow tube to the handle lever. Carefully place the tank atop the toilet bowl, being certain not to overtighten the mounting bolts, which can crack the tank. Reconnect the refill tube from the fill valve to the overflow tube.

    • 6). Reconnect the water supply line and flush the toilet, checking for any leaks.
