How to Put Holes in Shells for Craft Activities

    • 1). Fold a towel to create a thick pad on your work surface. Use any size towel that will give you a soft cushion for the shell as you create the hole.

    • 2). Place a shell on top of the folded towel. Position the shell with the location for the hole laying against the folded towel.

    • 3). Determine where you want the hole on each shell. Consider the weight of the individual shell and the direction it will hang from different hole locations.

    • 4). Hold the shell in one hand and position the point of a sharp, thick needle on the inside of the shell where you want the hole.

    • 5). Tap the needle once, gently, with a small hammer while holding the shell on the towel to create a small dimple in the shell. Do not try to go through the shell with the needle. Put the needle aside and check for the indentation with your finger. Use a small hammer with a flat surface.

    • 6). Position the tip of a narrow, sharp pointed screw in the dimple. Keep the shell in position on the towel to absorb the pressure on the shell.

    • 7). Turn the screw by hand, gently, making a few short turns to widen the dimple inside the shell. Do not work too quickly or the dimple will crack the shell. Remove the screw by turning it in reverse until it is free.
